About Us

Pediatric Urology Associates physicians

Pediatric Urology Associates’ founding partner, Selwyn Levitt, was one of the pioneers in the field of pediatric urology and the first urologist in the tri-state area to practice pediatric urology exclusively.

Since its inception in the 1970s, Pediatric Urology Associates has grown to become one of the largest groups of pediatric urologists in the United States, with several of its physicians holding positions as departmental chiefs at prominent medical centers in the region.

As a result of the group’s national and international reputation for excellence, many of its members have been invited to lecture and instruct in the United States and other countries on the subject of pediatric urologic disorders and treatment.

Pediatric urologic problems are similar to most commonly occurring childhood conditions.

Simple undescended testis and hernias are extremely prevalent in the childhood years and affect more children than most people realize. It is in the best interest of children that these simple but, at times, complicated procedures be taken care of by someone who performs them routinely on children. Complex urologic problems, such as bladder exstrophy, hypospadias, urinary tract obstructions, and abnormalities of genital development should only be handled by physicians with specialized surgical training in the care of these problems in children. The range of services PUA offers varies from the treatment of simple bed-wetting to major reconstructive surgery.

PUA also offers wide access to its patients, with offices and surgical sites from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island, and Staten Island to Westchester, Upstate New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

Our Mission

Pediatric Urology Associates’ mission is to improve the health of the children we serve with a commitment to excellence in urologic care. Our goal is to offer accessible, high-quality care and services that set community standards, exceed patients’ expectations. PUA seeks to provide services in a caring, convenient, and cost-effective manner.

Pediatric Urology Associates delivers high-quality comprehensive pediatric urologic care to the tri-state area with excellence, compassion, and competence.

What is a Pediatric Urologist?

If your child has an illness or disease of the genitals or urinary tract (kidney, ureters, bladder), a pediatric urologist has the experience and qualification to treat your child.

In order to be considered a pediatric urologist, a doctor must devote a minimum of 50% of his or her practice to the urologic problems of infants, children, and adolescents.

All of our team members have had the following training:

  • At least four years of medical school

  • One year of surgical internship

  • At least three additional years of residency training in general urology

  • At least one additional year of fellowship training in pediatric urology

  • Robotic surgery and Laparoscopy is now part of the fellowship training

Children are not just small adults. They cannot always say what is bothering them. They cannot always answer medical questions and are not always able to be patient and cooperative during a medical examination. Pediatric urologists know how to examine and treat children in a way that makes them relaxed and cooperative. In addition, pediatric urologists often use equipment specially designed for children. Most pediatric urologists’ offices are arranged and decorated with children in mind. This includes the examination rooms and waiting rooms, which may have toys, videos, and reading materials for children. This helps create a comfortable and nonthreatening environment for your child.

If your pediatrician suggests that your child see a pediatric urologist, you can be assured that he or she has had the most extensive and comprehensive training, as well as the greatest expertise in dealing with children and treating children’s urinary tract disorders.
