Surgery Times: Schneider Children’s Hospital
Surgeries are scheduled according to age order: youngest to oldest. All outpatient
surgeries are performed before surgeries where children stay over in the hospital.
This office will call you the afternoon before the scheduled surgery day to
tell you what time to arrive at the Admitting Office of the hospital (located in the
lobby of the Children’s Hospital). It is VERY important that you arrive at this
time so that all paper work can be processed before the scheduled surgery time.

Feeding Instructions: Schneider Children’s Hospital
The latest that your child can eat or drink is listed below. Food or liquids in your child’s stomach during surgery can be VERY DANGEROUS!!!. If you do not follow these instructions carefully your child’s surgery will be cancelled by anesthesia.
- 2 ½ Hours before surgery: Clear Liquids: fluids you can see through (water, Pedialyte, Ginger Ale) NOT orange juice or chicken soup
- 4 Hours before surgery: breast milk
- 6 Hours before surgery: formula
- 8 Hours before surgery: Everything else
Pre-Operative Testing: Schneider Children’s Hospital
Our office will guide you as to whether any blood or urine testing is necessary before your child’s surgery. In general,
- No testing is needed if your child is healthy and older than 6 months
- African-American children younger than 4 years require Sickle-Cell testing
- Girls older than 14 year require a blood or urine pregnancy test
Medical Clearance: Schneider Children’s HospitalYour child needs to be evaluated by the pediatrician 1-2 days prior to surgery. You must bring this clearance with you to the hospital on the day of surgery.
X-rays: Schneider Children’s HospitalIf your child is having bladder or kidney surgery please brings the sonograms, VCUG, nuclear scans of the condition with you to the hospital. Your surgeon needs to have these x-rays in the room during the operation.
Medications Please be advised that the listing of medications DOES NOT include: tylenol, antibiotics, seizure medications, behavior and/or anxiety medications, heart, blood pressure, diabetes, asthma or respiratory medications.
Please DO NOT stop any of the above prescription medications before checking with the prescribing physician FIRST!
NO ASPIRIN OR IBUPROFEN SHOULD BE TAKEN WITHIN TWO (2) WEEKS PRIOR TO YOUR SURGERY DATE.
Please refer to the list of other medications that are NOT TO BE TAKEN 2 weeks prior to surgery. If you are not sure of the specific ingredients in any medication, please check with your pharmacist or the prescribing physician.

Post –Operative Instructions Your post-operative instruction sheet can be printed from this website. Please read them before your surgery. Bring a list of questions with you to the hospital so your surgeon can review them with you. Be aware that your child may go home with prescriptions for medication.

Long Island Expressway - Eastbound
Exit 33 - Lakeville Road; from service road make right turn onto Lakeville Road; proceed south one mile to the Medical Center entrance on right.
Long Island Expressway - Westbound
Exit 33 - Lakeville Road; proceed on service road to second traffic light; make left turn under Expressway overpass onto Lakeville Road; proceed south one mile to the Medical Center entrance on the right.
Grand Central-Northern State Parkway - Eastbound
Exit 25 - Lakeville Road; make right turn onto Marcus Avenue and proceed to traffic light; make left turn onto Lakeville Road; proceed south 3/10 mile to Medical Center entrance on the right.
Grand Central-Northern State Parkway - Westbound
Exit 25 - Lakeville Road; exit under the underpass; bear right around cloverleaf (heading south); entrance to the Medical Center on the right.
Cross Island Parkway - Northbound or Southbound
Exit onto Long Island Expressway (Route 495) - eastbound or onto Grand Central Parkway; see above for instructions for exits.
Parking is available in the visitors' garage 24 hrs/day.

The garage can be reached either from the Lakeville Road or 271st St roadways.
For your convenience, there is Valet Parking service at the main entrance of Long Island Jewish Hospital.
