Surgery Times

Surgeries are scheduled according to age order: youngest to oldest. All outpatient surgeries are performed before surgeries where children stay over in the hospital. The time of your arrival is determined the day before your surgery. For patients that are scheduled for Monday surgical procedures, your time of arrival is determined on the Friday before. The hospital will call you the day before with the time and eating instructions. If you do not hear from the hospital before 4pm, you can call 845-333-1065.

Pre-Operative Testing

Please make an appointment with YOUR child’s personal physician/pediatrician 4-7 days prior to the surgery date for the pre-operative medical clearance exam and any necessary lab testing that may be required prior to your surgery. For patients that are scheduled to have surgery on a Monday, please do not count the Saturday and Sunday prior to your surgery date when going for your pre-operative exam and lab testing.

Once everything has been completed, either you or your physician’s office must fax a copy of the form and tests results to our office at (914)493-8564 or (914)345-1623. All pre-operative information must be in our office at least 2 days prior to surgery. It is your responsibility to call us to make sure that all of the necessary pre-operative information has been received by our office. (One exception: In some cases, your pediatrician may be willing to do the pre-operative exam just 1-2 days prior to surgery and this is acceptable as long as ALL pre-op information is received by our office before noon the day before surgery).

No immunizations are to be given 2 weeks prior to surgery.

Cancellations

In the event of an emergency or cancellation of surgery after office hours, please call our main number (914) 493-8628 and leave a detailed message with our answering service.

Insurance and precertification

Our billing office will contact your insurance company approximately 7-10 days prior to your surgery date to obtain pre-certification for your procedure. However, it is your responsibility as the insured/patient to be aware of your current coverage including any deductibles, co-insurance or referrals that may be required. Should you have any questions pertaining to your pre-certification or if there has been any change in your personal information (address, phone number or insurance information) please contact our billing office at (914)962-8290.

For patients requiring a referral, please make sure that your referrals are still valid and have not expired. You may do so either through your physician’s office or with your insurance company.

We also advise you to contact your insurance company prior to your surgery to confirm that both the hospital and the anesthesia group are participating with your plan.

Feeding Instructions

Eating and drinking instructions specific to your child will be communicated to you the day before your procedure. Food or liquids in your child’s stomach during surgery can be VERY DANGEROUS!!. If these instructions are followed incorrectly, it may delay or possibly cancel the surgery. If you have any questions regarding these instructions please call our office at (914) 493-8628 or email us at westchestersurgery@pedsurology.com.

Day of Surgery

Please bring your child and the following items with you:
  • Immunization records
  • Insurance information
  • Favorite toy/blanket which will be given to your child after surgery.
  • Comfortable and loose fitting clothing.

Operating room holding area

Your child will be brought to the holding area and checked in. Only one parent will be allowed into this area at a time. You will be asked to wear a surgical gown while in the holding area.

Anesthesia information

You will have the opportunity to meet the Anesthesiologist before your child goes into the operating room. Any questions regarding anesthesia should be addressed at that time.
Even if the hospital participates with your insurance company, this will not always mean that the Anesthesia group participates. Listed below are the numbers to the various anesthesia groups that are affiliated with the different facilities. We advise you to contact the anesthesia group directly to confirm their participation with your insurance plan. This is not the responsibility of our office or billing department.
