PEDIATRIC UROLOGY FELLOWSHIP

The Division of Pediatric Urology at the Schneider Children’s Hospital, North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System offers an ACGME approved fellowship training program in pediatric urology.  Our two year program meets the requirements for the graduating fellows to apply for the Certificate of Specialization in Pediatric Urology offered by the American Board of Urology. The program was last reviewed by the ACGME in 2004 and was granted a five-year reaccreditation.

Year 1:  The clinical year consists of a combination of operative, in-patient, out-patient, experience and educational conferences in pediatric urology.  The clinical training is conducted primarily at Schneider Children’s Hospital where surgery takes place every day and where over 1200 children are operated upon by the pediatric urology service.  A supplemental surgical experience takes place at the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital of Westchester Medical Center.  There is an extensive experience in laparoscopic and complex reconstructive surgery.

Year 2:  The second year is structured to serve as a transitional year to becoming an attending physician.  The fellow serves as an attending two days per week learning to manage patients with greater independence.  The other days of the week will be spent designing, conducting, and publishing on clinical research projects.

Goals of the Fellowship: It is the intention of the fellowship training program to provide the fellow with the foundation and skill to practice clinical medicine in children with urologic conditions. The combination of a broad and extensive operative and outpatient experience provides the basis for attaining these goals. Specifically, upon completion of the fellowship, the fellow should be:

  1. proficient in common and complex open and laparoscopic surgery of the genitourinary tract in children
  2. able to evaluate and manage operative and non-operative clinical urological problems in children
  3. able to evaluate, manage, and perform surgery when necessary on children presenting with trauma or acute scrotal complaints
  4. able to use and perform urodynamic studies to evaluate and manage bladder dysfunction
  5. able to manage postoperative pediatric urology patients
  6. proficient in evaluating radiologic studies with urologic complaints or documented urologic conditions
  7. appreciative of the multi-disciplinary approach to evaluating and managing children with myelodysplasia, ambiguous genitalia, urologic malignancies and nephrologic conditions
